Songs & Their History

 Old Songbooks & Sheet Music

last updated: 31.10.2014

In the last couple of months I have scanned a couple of German songbooks as well as some sheet music from the 19th and early 20th century - all from my own little collection -  and posted some of them at first as pdf's on this site or in my blog. (see the series Old German Songbooks on Humming A Diff'rent Tune).  Now I have also started to upload some of my scans to the Internet Archive

All these songbooks are - as far as I could ascertain - in the Public Domain. Therefore the digitized versions are of course also in the Public Domain ("gemeinfrei" in Germany).   Please note that these digital copies are in no way perfect. I only have a cheap scanner and most of these books were not in the best shape. But none of these publications has until now been digitized by any library so perhaps my scans should suffice as working copies for anyone who needs them for research.

At the Internet Archive I am busy posting a collection of German songbooks for schools published between 1850 and 1916. They can be found easily with this link:

The rest are also mostly songbooks - not for schools but for other purposes -  well as some sheet music. I don't want to list them all here but only those I have written about in my blog.
